Monthly Short Walk: Greenmount and Kirklees Valley.
On a bright but cool morning thirty two walkers set out from Greenmount and headed down Brandlesholme Road and turned right on to a narrow footpath, facing Nabbs Way. The path took us onto Shepherd Street, where we turned right and headed for Tower Farm.
After turning left at the farm we walked through Kirklees Valley, following the brook through the wood before turning right and making our way up to Kirklees Trail. Once on the trail we turned left and walked for a short distance before turning right and headed for Leemans Hill, where we crossed over the road and continued onto Scobell Street. After passing through a stile, we joined the first muddy path of the day, that took us over to Walshaw Road, which we crossed and walked into the area of Owlerborrow.
We then continued to Leigh Lane, where we turned left and followed the lane down to All Saints Church, where we made a short detour into St Geoge’s Park to enjoy our morning coffee. After coffee we retraced our steps for a short distance and continued through the streets to Tottington Road, where we joined a path on our left that followed the Feeder, a small canal designed to take water from the River Irwell, at Burrs to Elton Reservoir, unfortunately it has been overgrown for many years.
After waking for a short distance, we joined a footpath on our left that took us to the bottom of the Kirklees Trail, where we turned left and walked as far as the exit for Darlington Close, on our left. We turned right and followed a very steep and muddy footpath down into the valley.
The path then climbs out of the valley and up to Garside Hey Road, where we turned left and headed through Kingsbury Wood. Once through the wood we rejoined Kirklees Trail and made our way back to Greenmount having covered seven sunny miles.
