Ancient Lanes and Buckden Wood.
On glorious April morning twenty nine walkers set out from The Old School in Greenmount and crossed over Holcombe Road, that was once part of the turnpike network of roads, owned by Elton & Blackburn Trust, up until 1880. Continuing along the road we turned right when we reached Bolton Road West and headed down to the Hare & Hounds Pub. Our route took us behind the pub and onto the setts of Holcombe Old Road, where we started the steady climb up to the village of Holcombe. After walking through the village, we walked along Moor Road to Buckden Wood, passing the National Trust property, Chatterton Close along the way.
From the wood we started the very steep climb up to Pilgrim’s Cross where we stopped for morning coffee and to get our breath back. Once refreshed we walked along the flagstones to Harcles Hill and began the decent back to Holcombe Village.
On reaching Moorbottom Road we turned right and made our way through the grounds of Hey House and the top of the steps which took us down to Redisher Wood.
Once in the wood we followed our familiar route back to Greenmount having covered six very sunny miles.
