Heading West: Greenmount, Affetside, Top o’ th Knotts, back to Greenmount.
The walk began with twenty-eight walkers heading down Holcombe Road to Old Kay’s Park. Once through the park we crossed Turton Road and made our way through a very overgrown footpath up to Cann Street, which we crossed and continued along a track into the fields. After walking through the fields, we turned right, and continued to a gate, at the top of the track and walked diagonally across the fields. Eventually the route took us into Yeoman’s Farm, which was free from mud due to the very dry weather. Once through the farm we turned right onto Watling Street, the site of the old Roman Road, and made our way to Affetside. At Trinity Church we turned left and headed down to Top o’ th Knotts, and on to Tottington Road, Harwood.

After walking up the road for a short distance, we turned right, up to Hill End Farm and to The Height, where we had good views over the western part of Lancashire and beyond. Once over the height we found an ideal spot for our coffee stop before heading down to Old Holts, and Betley Hall Lane. At Bentley Hall Farm we turned left and crossed the fields to Four Lane Ends and on into Tottington.

The last part of our walk took us past the mural, dedicated to George Peachment. Private George Stanley Peachment, from Tottington, was posthumously awarded the highest military honour following an immense act of bravery during the First World War. The VC was awarded for gallantry due to his devotion to his company commander, Captain Guy Dubs, after the officer had been seriously wounded in combat at the Battle of Loos in France on September 25, 1915.

Our route back to Greenmount followed the Kirklees Trail, covering seven miles.
